Hi all,Welcome to the space to change your life It is summer time again. The sun does its best to shine and the holiday brochures come out. Some people say that going on holiday with children is stressful. It can be when you have differing ages in the group travelling together. For me any holiday –which is a break from your normal routine – will only be stressful if the communication around what the holiday means to people is blurred. A very simple solution is to establish, preferably before you book your holiday, what is it that everyone travelling wants/desires/needs from the holiday. What expectations does each member of the group have? I like to give this job to the youngest member of the travelling party. Here’s the how to………….for before you book 1. Ask each person individually (and write down their answers) what kind of holiday they would like. It is a good idea to have a few headings as examples i.e. relaxing, adventure, sporty, touring etc. 2. If everyone is agreement on the type of holiday they would like then book/arrange that holiday. 3. If there is a mixed preference then ask each individual, ‘given that not everyone agrees on the type of holiday we go on how many days would you like to spend doing….(insert their chosen choice here) and how many are you willing to spend doing …(insert the other persons choice here)’. 4. Work out a compromise with the whole group so that each member of the group will get some time on their preferred option. If you have already booked your holiday you can still do this exercise 1. Ask each member of the travelling party what it is they expect from the holiday. 2. Check that all members are in agreement. If they are not it is best to call a meeting of the entire group. 3. At the meeting have each person state what it is they expect from the holiday and work out compromises on the amount of time given to each preference. For instance if you have a person who wants 10 days by the pool and 4 touring on a bus and another who wants 10 days water sport and 4 days by the pool will need to work out a time compromise. By doing this exercise before you travel it reduces the frustration that is often felt on holidays. Knowing in advance how much time is to be given to each preference clears the potential for arguments. One final note be flexible……..when you get to your destination all the preferred options may not be available (the theme park might be closed!). Be ready to look around for substitute options! Follow the steps and let me know how you get on! Remember to enjoy life and be kind to yourself
