Newsletter: August 2010
Hi all,
Welcome to the space to change your life
Earlier this year I was sent a few requests to talk about language and how we use or misuse it. In NLP language patterns are divided into three groups, Deletions, Distortions and Generalisations. Knowing how to recognise and use these words/language patterns can make you a most effective communicator.
I’d like to talk about three words that get used on an almost daily basis and often end up being misused.
Can’t Always Try
Can’t
In NLP the word can’t is under the heading of a generalisation. It implies that there is no possibility of achieving something.
- “I can’t tell him the truth”
- “It’s a job that can’t be done”
- “I can’t spell”
Words like can’t, won't, impossible, are modal operators of possibility. When you hear these in your own or in someone else’s speech then you can gently challenge them by asking one of the following questions
- "What would happen if you did?"
- "What stops you?"
- “Who told you?”
This month I want you to listen for the word can’t and see how you handle it.
